University of North America (UONA)
Executive Summary: Student AI Policy
Purpose: This document outlines the University of North America's official policy on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), including Generative AI, by students in academic work. The goal is to promote responsible use while protecting academic integrity.
KEY POINTS:
General Rules
- Al is a tool, not a substitute. Students must complete and submit their own work.
- Instructors set the rules. If an assignment doesn't allow Al use, don't use it.
- Disclose any AI help. If you're allowed to use AI, you must clearly state how and when it was used.
- Verify everything. Al can be wrong. You're responsible for any errors in your submission.
Prohibited Uses
- Submitting Al-generated work as your own without permission
- Using Al during exams or restricted assessments
- Using Al for assignments that test your personal understanding or skill unless explicitly allowed
- Failing to disclose Al use when required
Permitted Uses (when allowed by instructor)
- Brainstorming, generating ideas
- Grammar and clarity improvements on your own writing
- Summarizing or outlining content as a study aid
- Getting feedback or debugging help on code
Enforcement
- Misuse = academic misconduct- Consequences include: failing grades, academic probation, or expulsion (for serious or repeated offenses)
Privacy & Security
- Never input private, sensitive, or confidential information into Al tools
- The University's data protection policies apply
Support & Resources
- Workshops, tutorials, and consultations are available
- Writing Center and Library offer Al-use guidance
- Stay updated via UONA's Academic Integrity Office
Student-Friendly AI Policy (Simplified Version)
DOs:
- Use Al for brainstorming or polishing your own writing (only if your professor allows it)
- Check facts and understand anything you get from Al
- Tell your professor if you used Al and how
DON'Ts:
- Don't copy/paste from ChatGPT and turn it in as your own
- Don't use Al during a quiz, test, or exam
- Don't skip checking what Al tells you - it can be wrong
Rule of thumb: If you're unsure, ASK your instructor first! If you break the rules: You could fail the assignment, the class, or face serious discipline.
